Another Big Brown Song

Here’s one.

Here’s mine. The lyrics are posted below the video. Those who know me can testify that I usually (try to) rock out. I’m a 70s blues/rocker at heart. But the last couple of weeks left me in a cyclone of anger and resentment and confusion which has reduced me to my current state, wussed out 60s folk singer.

As always, give the movie a couple minutes to load.

Two down, Brown
one to go
Why should we root
if you’ll just leave us
Two down, Brown
one to go
Why fall in love
if you’ll deceive us

Now is the time
for heroes and heroes
not zeros and zeros
and then
you’re
gone

Two down, Brown
one to go
Listen to the silver bells
foreboding
Two down, Brown
quite a show
Do you comprehend
what you’re promoting?

Now is the time
for giving and giving
which may bring forgiving
but you’re
withdrawn

Three down, Brown
none to go
Older autumn leaves
await your presence
Three down, Brown
where’d ya go?
The ones you love
will never eat
like peasants

Now is the time
for heroes and heroes
not zeros and zeros
and then
you’re
gone

Yesterday: “Hot barns are cool, so to speak. Barns just beginning to percolate are even cooler—money to be made for those who follow trainers.”

Today.

And one of our popular angles lately, a Western Expression first time on turf.

Big Brown’s stud deal fell through (for now)—boo friggin’ hoo. Messed up my shuteye last night; I’m sleep-sick today; there’s nothing I hate more than an in-season stud deal that guarantees you’ll barely see the horse you love again. Factor in the announcement coming during the Triple Crown….who in this beleaguered game cares other than the people who stand (perfect verb) to rake in the cabbage? It’s such a disgusting affront to racing fans, especially the ones thrilled by that full-extension turbo gear of the Derby winner.

Would IEAH waiting a year ruin the universe? Can’t talk about it anymore. Getting sick again. I’m not surprised, I’m just sick sick sick of it. Curlin has been a gift. I still miss Ghostzapper; at least we got to see the best of him, as an adult. No peace, outtie.

The Wildlife Exacta?

If you didn’t watch (or tape) the ESPN Preakness draw, the odds-on  favorite drew the 7. Wildlife fans will undoubtedly play the 7-8 exacta: Big Brown Kentucky Bear.

Before returning to the Preakness, I must paws to speak about today’s Belmont card—it’s in my claws at the Daily Me.

Two apiece for Hill and Johnny V, who rallied Ready’s Image (3rd, $3.80) from last after a sluggish start. Promising comeback. The number won’t be outstanding but he should improve off this effort against some fast hungry recent maiden winners.

Cool Tales (2nd, $9.90) romped; Jimmy Jerkens remains en fuego.

Exonerated (4th, $4.70), pounded late, was poetry for Motion, winning her grass debut with a finishing stride that said, Right back. Another nice grassy Johannesburg (Marcavelly).

Sixth race was interesting for its trainers. The exacta ($11.40) of Moral Compass and Holiday Trip combined the piping hot Barclay Tagg and the sneaky-warm Stanley Hough. Billy Turner, doing fine work recently, finished fourth with Cloud Nine (25-1) after finishing second with Algiers (1st, 36-1).

Timothy Ritvo won the eighth with Formal King ($5.40) and was third in the finale with Super Envoy 34-1.

Hot barns are cool, so to speak. Barns just beginning to percolate are even cooler—money to be made for those who follow trainers.

The broodmare of the young millennium has done it again, this time winning the Grade II Peter Pan with the half-brother and three-quarter-brother of Belmont Stakes winners Jazil and Rags to Riches, respectively.

WOW to the fifth power. Casino Drive’s 5 3/4 length victory was clocked in a highly respectable 1:47 4/5. Mint Lane held off Ready’s Echo for place. Tomcito hit some traffic but not enough to warrant a real excuse.

Ladies and gentleman of the Beat Big Brown Fan Club, in Casino Drive you have a serious, serious weapon for the third leg. This Japanese globetrotter is a fresh beast with a race over the track and a pedigree that stays till 2012.

Yo—this was the Mineshaft colt’s second effin’ start! Casino Drive also broke slowly but then had a perfect inside-out trip on an inside-favoring track. Negative negated by positive, a push.

He is one long robust chestnut boy, longer than Curlin, if not quite as muscular, and looks much like his champion sister—-just bigger and with four bandages. He’s easily the largest Mineshaft I’ve seen.

Can’t wait to hear from Rick Dutrow!!! I’m not being a wiseguy; I value his handicapping opinion highly and I’m really curious what he thinks of Casino Drive.

You think Big Brown’s route to the Derby was surreal? The Peter Pan’s become a NW1!

How the game has changed.

Meanwhile, not to be overlooked was the first-timer Unbridled’s Heart ($29.80), who won the fifth race by 10 lengths in fast time, 1:42 1/5.

Just a week from the tragedy we gain a very promising Unbridled’s Song who looks like Eight Belles. She would’ve bet this colt for sure—same coloring as the Derby-placed filly, a bit thicker, same dad, and Unbridled’s Heart is from the same connections as Bernardini, Darley/Albertani/Castellano. Stakes quality, obviously; the Beyer’s gotta be mid-to-high 90s. He was the winner every step, acting more 3-5 than 14-1, controlled professional speed, sweet acceleration.

But not with such classic potential as that Japanese monster.

Breakdown at Belmont; Rajeeev Spills

Here we go again. Sealed sloppy track produced an ugly breakdown in the second race when Megalodon broke down in deep stretch, throwing Rajeeev. No word yet on the condition of my favorite local jockey—he didn’t ride the remainder of his mounts—and, here’s the truth, I couldn’t watch the head-on replay to see how badly injured the horse was. I fear the worst.

God help this sport.

Otherwise…

Longest Price in Short Field.

Notice that Hill LOST THE WHIP and the horse still won as the others slashed away. Jerry Bailey, as Green But Game pointed out recently, says most horses give you their all without the stick.

Four more shippers/returnees scored.

Trick a Treat (1st, 14-1), third, reminds us that Randi Persaud’s still a dangerous man.

The James Gang continues. Forest of Dreams (4th, $3.60) and Ring Bernadette (9th, $8) devoured the soup for Jimmy Jerkens.

Personal Ensign’s son (4th) broke slowly, showed nothing. He’s a Kingmambo—grass will likely be his second start.

Hough had another, Giant Deputy (8th, $4.50)–again: watch out for a Hough juvenile. Sharp barn good with youngsters.

Grandchildren of Gone West ran second twice at Belmont and scored once at Monmouth. I know this because I always bet anything from the Gone West line in the mud or slop.

Please, Pretty Please, Fellas, for the Good of the Game, for the Legacy of Eight Belles

After five shippers scored yesterday at Belmont, three more popped today: Love in Seattle (2nd, $18, Pha), Classic Love (7th, $3.70, Lrl) and My Princess Jess (8th, $16.80, GP). Devi (7th, 31-1, FL) and Panthera Tigre (9th, 5-1, GP) each finished second under Chavez. Speed figures play a bigger factor, they can really help, when all these shippers start returning/invading.

LONGEST PRICE in SHORT FIELD AGAIN!!

And another Wheelaway, first-timer Birds Away (4th, $7.30) breaks her maiden; this one’s a chestnut; the other recent winners are Unbridled gray, whiter than someone we used to know, by Unbridled Song.

Barclay (Hamsa, Florida) is winning at will. He had three today, one from Keeneland (Flawless Treasure, 3rd, $5.70) and two much-the-best NYBs (Woodrunner, 6th, $4; Groomedforvictory, 8th, $3.40) back with their own kind after solid form at Gulfstream.

Coa had a triple, Castellano a pair. Watch Rajeeev pump and shake the reins on Mackinaw (2nd, $4.50). Strength, stamina, young, hungry.

Money Manager (4th, 7-2) lost the bob; tough beat for Pompa, Reynolds (Big Brown’s original team) and Railbird, who spot-selected the Distorted Humor gelding.

Inside-out Cedeno was second in the finale, 25-1, $17 to place. I can only warn so many times. The bomb’s gonna happen—at least a couple.

Withers winner Harlem Rocker can do the Preakness, or the Queens Plate or—how’s this one—train up to the Belmont and be loaded for brown bear. Rags super-freshed Curlin last year; her coat outshone his that day, no question. Pletcher’s coat looked great, too.
